Our Roadmap to 11+ Success in Wirral (Years 3–5)

A clear, structured journey that builds the right skills at the right time — from strengthening KS2 foundations in Year 3, to developing 11+ technique in Year 4, and mastering speed, stamina and exam strategy in Year 5.

A Three-Year Plan That Builds Confidence and Exam Performance

Most successful 11+ outcomes are not achieved through last-minute cramming. They’re built through steady progression: strong foundations first, then technique, then timed performance.

At The Study Zone, our roadmap guides pupils from Year 3 through to Year 5, ensuring each year has a clear purpose and your child is always working on what matters most for their stage of development.

If your child is also aiming for St Anselm’s entrance exam preparation or Upton Hall entrance exam preparation, we offer specialist workshops to focus on the specific skills and requirements of those exams.

Year 3 – The Launchpad

Purpose: Build the KS2 base.

In Year 3, we focus on strengthening the core literacy and numeracy skills that everything else depends on. By securing these fundamentals early, your child is perfectly positioned to begin formal 11+ preparation in Year 4 with confidence.

  • Secure reading fluency and comprehension foundations
  • Vocabulary development and accuracy in written work
  • Mental arithmetic confidence and number fluency
  • Strong habits: focus, resilience and consistency

Year 4 – The Foundation

Purpose: Introduce 11+ technique.

Year 4 marks the official start of the 11+ journey. We introduce essential Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning techniques, alongside the knowledge and methods pupils need before the pace accelerates in Year 5.

  • Reasoning technique and question familiarity
  • Early exam strategy and working patterns
  • Building a robust knowledge base for Year 5 intensity
  • Confidence with new question styles and timed tasks

Year 5 – The Championship Year

Purpose: Convert knowledge into points.

Year 5 is focused on performance. We shift the emphasis to speed, stamina and exam strategy, using targeted drills and full-length mock exams to ensure pupils peak at the right time for the September tests.

  • Timed technique and accuracy under pressure
  • Speed-building drills and exam decision-making
  • Full mock papers and targeted feedback loops
  • Stamina and consistency across complete papers

Branching Pathways

Our core roadmap supports the Wirral 11+ (GL Assessment). If your child is targeting additional entrance exams, we offer specialist workshops to cover the specific skills and formats required.
